A soul shadow is the fettered soul of an individual, bound to a place by magic.
It is the fate of Knights of the Order of the Flame who outlive their dragons without breaking the Bond or else Bonding to a new dragon. Their souls become bound to the place where their bones lie, unable to pass beyond. Only by recovering their soul crystal can the Order member be freed.
The Order Knight Tiuri became a soul shadow after her dragon, Tagorah, was sealed inside a magic barrier covering the city of Alwarren with the war giant Tultal. Tagorah died in battle, and Tiuri's life ended shortly thereafter. She continued to haunt the outskirts of Alwarren, awaiting a champion who could enter the city and recover her soul crystal.
